Meditations about the Brazilian Agricultural Sector

3/10/2013

There is a long time since Brazilian people (today mostly urban), are introduced to some paradoxes in National Agriculture.

At the same time that we see the country among the leading producers and exporters of agricultural raw materials of the world, we have difficulty accessing the important markets in the world.

At the same time that the Brazilian trade balance surplus is show dependent to agricultural exports, we do not have a macroeconomic politics that priories the productive sector in detriment of financial speculation.

At the same time we become a producer and exporter Nation of agricultural technologies, we note the lack of a consistent National Agricultural Politics.

At the same time that we set records for productivity in various sectors, we perceived viscosities to access financial credit and insurance that aims to protect the farmers.

From these four considerations, it is reasonable to think: How is it possible to get positive results without considering the production chain in its entirety? Given the good results described above, the Brazilians could imagine, and rightly so, that the homework is being done by the Government. However, as already said Professor Dr. Roberto Rodrigues some years ago: "My son, who breaks is the farmer not agriculture." Perhaps this is the explanation for this question.

We are a Nation that has an Agricultural vocation. Many Brazilians had inherited rural activities as a way of life and not merely as a means. Maybe so, continue to persist in their activities even contradictory economic scenarios.

Every true change does not appear suddenly. Requires an internal individual effort and may subsequently be reflected in the socio-political interactions surrounding each citizen. I believe we can take an important step in this direction. To do that, is necessary to ask for ladies and gentlemen: Do you have a contract to supply your agricultural product for the industry? What is the degree of commitment that the processing industry for raw materials has with farmers? Why would it be interesting to it (Industry) not to commit to a portfolio of suppliers (farmers)?

I think we should start this dialogue, each one in your segment in order to overcome a bottleneck, which depends solely on each of us. Leave to wait the invisible hand of the Government to resolve these problems. Do it yourself.

The formalization of contracts for the supply of raw materials for the agricultural industry is one of the pillars that sustain its own growth. Contracts can create economic security for the expansion of production scale, can enable investments in improving the quality of agricultural products and can result in increased financial margins for processing industries.
